LANGUAGE KEEPERS

LANGUAGE KEEPERS

Preserving Our Mother Tongues

Language Keepers is an intergenerational, community-based initiative that supports seniors in sharing and preserving their mother tongues as vital expressions of culture, identity, and lived experience. As many heritage languages face decline, particularly with the aging of fluent speakers, this program centres seniors as knowledge holders and cultural leaders.

Through facilitated language-sharing sessions, storytelling circles, and informal classes, seniors fluent in Indigenous, African, and Caribbean languages engage youth and newcomers in learning, conversation, and cultural exchange. The program also supports the documentation of oral traditions, key vocabulary, and expressions to create accessible community language resources.

OBJECTIVES

HOW IT WORKS

Small group classes are led by elder instructors fluent in Moorè, Twi, Yoruba, Cree, Somali, Haitian Creole, and more. Lessons include conversation, songs, and oral storytelling.
